I know it is only Wednesday, but honestly…..whew!
On Monday, I purposely cleared my schedule in anticipation of hearing from the urologist and setting up an ultrasound (to check for further kidney stones) for that afternoon. He was delayed with surgeries and didn’t get in touch until just before noon, said the next step would be an MRI and that would be coordinated by the oncologist, he’d get in touch with her.
Then I got a call that my daughter was being taken by ambulance to the ER after her support staff called 911. It was an actual emergency, but to protect her privacy, I’m going to be intentionally vague on the details.
Suffice to say that the next nearly 24 hours were critical, and I am happy to report that she is alive, and has been admitted to a specialty hospital where she will receive necessary treatment.
Everyone on her support team, and the responders after that did everything right, and that made the first miracle possible, which was that she was on the way to the ER just moments after the actual emergency.
The medics were kind and courteous and professional, and assured me that she’d been a model patient and let them know that her first ever ambulance ride, “wasn’t too bad.”
The second miracle was that we had a wonderful experience with the on call social worker. When I called today to thank them, the person who answered the social work line said, “well, I’m sure there is a procedure for that, but I’ve never actually gotten a thank you call. Hmmmm. Let me put you through to our Director. I’m sure he’ll appreciate the voicemail." I left a heartfelt, confidential voicemail, naming the social worker specifically and praising her ability to convey the necessary consent for the next steps to my daughter, as well as reassure me that she would do everything she could to get her a bed, "although it might take a miracle.”
Before the next afternoon, we had an ETA for a LOCAL placement, something that the behavioral nurse said was an absolute rarity, but again, miraculously, she had worked in a sister facility and was able to speak to my daughter in language appropriate for the situation to explain that it was going to be really helpful. I left a message with HER supervisor as well.
Last night she was checked in and I finally got a little bit of sleep.
Today I visited the facility when I took clothing and a few allowable personal items, and honestly, I am amazed. She’s right where she needs to be to get the help that she needs to get stabilized and back to the life that she loves. Always expect a miracle, friends...
We have a long and winding road ahead of us, there will be LOTS of knitting!
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
Oh my. Sending lots of good thoughs for you both!
