I was just thinking the last few days that I needed to blog a Holiday story, but I was stumped for content. I wondered aloud during the eclipse last night *whatever shall I write about this year?*
You KNOW I don't believe in coincidence...
I checked my mailbox after work today, and as I was leaving the kiosk, a man came up to me and said *Are you the KNITTER?* I said yes, I was, that I had been knitting for more than 40 years, that I consider it my spiritual practice.....and he said *OH, my wife is going to be SO thrilled! We saw your license plate and we just know you can help us...*
Not at all surprised, I walked with him to his car, met his lovely wife, and they told me this story:
Many years ago, when they were students in Boston, they found an old hand knitted Christmas stocking in the thrift store (before it was cool to go to thrift stores) and it had the name Betsy on the cuff....they decided to hang Betsy on the mantel and fill it with gifts to each other as they were newly married, and students at the time.
Years went by and they had their first child, and while they were in New Jersey, they saw an older woman knitting a Christmas stocking JUST LIKE THEIR Betsy, and so they asked her to knit one for their new baby, but with his proper name on it of course.
They had a second child, and the woman was still alive and still knitting, and so they got a matching stocking for that child as well.
Now they are grandparents and they would like to have SOMEONE who can knit two more stockings for the wives of the boys who are now men and have children of their own. They have asked around, but nobody seems willing to try to knit an old fashioned Christmas stocking (well TWO of them actually) without a pattern, to match their family heirlooms....
I took down their email address and promised I would do my best to try and find a solution to their quest as I know LOTS of talented knitters...
Merry Christmas, I wished them...
Happy KNITTING, they exclaimed!
Indeed.
