Ta-DAH!
An actual PAIR of finished objects! Details, first. I used the Cascade Fixation gifted to me by the marvellous maggi.(sticker on the label says 9342 28778....is this the color code? ROB?) Extra prayers for her family, knitted into every row. Size 3US needles, clover bamboo dpn. I really do love knitting socks with dpns and especially this pattern, brilliantly written so that the pattern repeats and the decreases and everything correspond to which needle you happen to be on. I love the way they fit. Yummy. I had enough left over to know that if I did them again in the variegated and I WANTED to get the stripyness more evenly matched from sock to sock, it could, theoretically, be done. I love these in their randomness, though. It certainly reflects my life at the moment, and I'll always remember This Time in my life when I snuggle into these socks.
Now, about the yarn in the Red Cross kit. It is quite soft. Feels *kinda* like koigu, you know, sproingy. Although I would never go out looking for a solid Olive drab to knit socks with (yawn) this color and texture are EXACTLY right for the idea of this kit. Knit a memory of what the Red Cross has meant in YOUR life. To ME it means blankets and blood, donated during Earthquakes...canned food and bottled water piled high on tables during the Forest Fires. Knowing that when Something Awful happens, the Red Cross Volunteers show up, immediately, with smiling faces and strong arms to lift boxes, pass sandbags and water buckets, dig trenches, and lend a hand where it is needed. So, I guess I don't want the yarn to be TOO soft, you know. I want strong, sturdy, reliable, serviceable yarn that you can COUNT on. Protection from the Elements, as it were. Perhaps these will be my Election year socks. Marching into battle with my fellow voters....I'll NEED some handmade WARMTH come November, and a shovel, prolly. Care to join me?

Arm in arm, sister!

Oh, I like your Broadripples! I need to go print that pattern out now. Thanks for the info about the Red Cross kit yesterday. What a neat gift that would make (the whole kit). I'm almost done with my first pair of socks (got through the scary part!) so I am already fired up to start another pair.

I think the lack of stripes is wonderful and it lifts the fixation up a notch on my list of things to try.
As for the election year, I picked up my shovel this week for all the action.

My best non-knitting friend works for the Red Cross...she'll just love the socks and I'll make them for her for Christmas! Just got a message that my kit was shipped. LOVE the Broadripple. The randomness IS a bit like life.

Just one question - is that one skein in your picture enough to make a pair of socks? I really like the kit too, and I'm kind of considering buying it, but that was one thing that jumped out at me and I was like... whoa. Enough or no?
